Bad packaging issues how do you deal with it???

How big an issue is this? I get lots of stuff and a lots of bad packaging. You know half the item sticking out the box or any small parts missing. What do you guys do? tell the company or if its an ebay seller, tell him? I figure once a year a package will get damaged or go missing, it happens. But get ticked off with this just thrown in box may be an extra piece of card board and off it goes. I have had a few items delivered in a garbage bay by the shipper and the hope all is well!!!!

If you sign a ticket that you have received everything in good order you are stuck with it.

What people need to do is note on the shipping ticket that there is possible damage, and then you have recourse with the shipping company. If you just sign on the dotted line you are on your own. Just the fact that it is poor packaging is not an entire excuse. It would have been packaged very well and still end up in a garbage sack. Once again, if you sign all is good, you get what you get. If you sign possible damage, the shipping company carries insurance to cover damage, regardless of how it was packaged.

Bottom line is, check your freight before you sign the ticket. Bob

You can't sign for it when you aren't home when it's delivered. UPS deliveries are the worst for me course I buy a lot of farm related things and they are heavy and have pointed parts. Don't recall having internal damage.

Rarely do I have to sign for stuff. UPS will not cover poor packaging if they lose it they will.

If UPS delivers it to you with no signature and it is damaged, you do have recourse. The shipper, by rights, has to agree to let UPS deliver it with no signature, and UPS will work with you if you get in touch with them.

90% of the people won't bother, and that is what they are banking on. If the box is just damaged but the contents are not, then who really cares?

Don't think just because you weren't there to sign, there is not someone liable.

If you sign on dotted line you still have a number of days( think 7 days ) to file a claim for concealed damage. The commerical freight line I drove for would have us call them on damages and they told us to have it signed with maybe damage and sometimes we opened carton to check and other time we took it back to our terminal and they would inspect it. When we picked up freight our company had us mark on bill of laden any marks, damage or crushed cartons and that we were not liable for damages. That way the party receiving the freight had to fill cliam with shipper for any damages. You can't open a package without signing or driver gets ok from freight line to open.

I bought a TV online last year. Had it shipped to work, secretary signed for it without even looking.

It was shipped in the factory box, the type box it would go on the store shelf in, not near enough for shipping. Sure enough, it was broken. Looked like it was on the bottom of the truck, got crushed. I called the place I ordered it, got a couple days runaround, then they wanted me to take pictures. About a week later they sent me a return order with prepaid shipping, sent it back. Another 2 weeks go by, can't get any commitment from them. Finally got a refund issued to my debit card.

Ordered another one, but not from them!

Steve glad it worked out. Always seemed to be an up hill battle to get credit card to do anything like that.

The place I work for deals mostly in pallets but we do haul some TV's and other large boxes UPS will not take.
If I show up and the box is in good shape; or the shrink wrap in in tact on the pallet; you have 2 choices.
Sign for it or refuse it.
You will not be allowed to open the box and check for concealed damage.
Concealed damage is on the shipper.
Either they did not pack it well enough; or it was broken when we picked it up.

Now if you want to sign for it and then open it that is OK.
I will make a note on the bill that you found concealed damage to where you have some recourse with the shipper.

If I show up with something that is clearly carrier damaged but you did not notice it while I was there and we note in on the bill and give you a claim #.
Tough luck. Once I leave the carrier will say you dropped in and caused the damage.

Just because you notice damage at delivery and get a claim # does not guaranty they will honor the claim. The pickup driver may have noted box crushed or such at the time of pickup.

If you do everything correctly; get a claim #; and file a claim. We could care less what is in the box.
We pay for the item up to XX per pound. If the cost over XX per pound you should have bought extra insurance. I forget what XX is equal to but can tell you it is less than a $1.00 per pound; I want to say it is even less than $0.50 per pound.
So when you get your $1200 TV that weighs 65 pounds and it is damaged you can expect to get less than $65 for you broken TV unless you bought extra insurance.

We receive lots of freight via UPS, Fedex, and a variety of other carriers. A large percentage of our incoming is damaged to the point of being crazy. Forklift punctures, tire tracks on top of packages, crushed areas where it's not feasibly possible, you name it. We keep a camera at the receiving dock and take pictures of any damage as it is received. If the driver will agree, he is often included in the picture.

Also, we are known to refuse shipments as well. The problem there is that we don't order things we don't need. So a beat up outer package may be OK inside.

The most damage comes from UPS. They always take care of it, after the fact. I just wish they could address the reasons before the fact. The pictures are the key.

Unfortunately there is a lot of fraud by consumers so I can see where you/the shipping company has that attitude.

But, if you stand back and look at what you wrote, its not really very customer friendly, or caring, is it?

Maybe kinda leads to more blowback than you should get, when your company has the 'we don't care about you or our service to you' attitude that is pretty clear in your message.

Paul I see both sides of it. I agree with some of it and do not agree with some of it.
So lets talk shipping company ONLY.

Its a dog eat dog world out there so companies are going to cut cost everywhere they can.
One hidden place cost can be cut is in insurance.
It is all spelled out in the tariff laws and people that ship everyday know them.
Some carry the insurance some do not.

The internet has become our worse enemy.
Before the internet we dealt we the public a little bit but now we deal with them a lot.
We are here to haul freight not be your friend.
When we pick up something we do not open the box and check it; so you will not be allowed to do so.

I'll tell you a personal story.
I ordered a home A/C unit over the internet.
Got it for a real good price.
When it got here it was well wrapped and there was no visible damage.
Opened it up and it was dented.
Not unusable but dented and coil fins bent.
The shipper blamed the carrier and the carrier blamed the shipper.
Since I am in the business I knew what happened.
The shipper was able to sell so cheep because he was shipping scratch and dent items.
He was buying all the scratch and dent items from the factory and selling them as new.

So as a carrier we have to protect our selves from fraud.
On the other hand if we damage it.
The box is crushed; there is a fork lift hole threw it.
We will gladly pay the claim and give you $65 for your $1200 TV and then turn around and sell your TV at the scrap item auction.

I say this not to put down on the carrier; shipper; or customer.
I say it to tell you how the system (fine print) works.
So the next time you consider ordering that item off the internet to save $20 and have it delivered to your house think about this first.

If you guys want to talk about how that $20 saved turns into $100 lost because our quoted service is tail gate to tail gate we can do that also.
