Compression gauges can be purchased pretty cheapiy if you want to get scientific about it, but it's pretty safe to say that the engine's probably pretty worn.
But I wouldn't worry too much if it runs ok.
What that short duration smoke probably is is oil getting past your valves guides. The valve stems and guides get worn and oil can get down into the cylinders that way -it just slowly gets past over time as the engine sits, then burns off when you start it.
That's a simpler fix than worn cylinders/rings (which typically produces blue smoke continuously while it runs). But there's probably no immediate need.
If it were me - I'd run 10w 40 - the poor man's engine overhaul. It's a bit thicker and a little less prone to getting past seals/guides/rings.
