Farmall 806

Alright guys, I have a 1963 Farmall 806. It is my grandfathers tractor and I'm looking for some other opinions on it. It will not start without ether
anytime, summer or winter. That being said after you have crunk it once it will crank right back up. What are y'all's thoughts on it? After you
crank on it for a few seconds it will start rolling out some white/blue smoke but won't hit on it. He says it has been like this for a long time but I'd
like to figure out if it's compression on what. Once you get it running it runs like a top and has decent power. I'm sure it's wore pretty well but I
would think it should still crank alright. Thanks for any advice in advance....

My not have anything to do with your tractor but I had a case backhoe like that and it was a fuel pump issue. For some reason the pump was not strong enough to prime the fuel when starting. Replaced the pump and started like brand new. You might need or want to overhaul just something to look into to get by for now

Compression gauges can be purchased pretty cheapiy if you want to get scientific about it, but it's pretty safe to say that the engine's probably pretty worn.

But I wouldn't worry too much if it runs ok.

What that short duration smoke probably is is oil getting past your valves guides. The valve stems and guides get worn and oil can get down into the cylinders that way -it just slowly gets past over time as the engine sits, then burns off when you start it.

That's a simpler fix than worn cylinders/rings (which typically produces blue smoke continuously while it runs). But there's probably no immediate need.

If it were me - I'd run 10w 40 - the poor man's engine overhaul. It's a bit thicker and a little less prone to getting past seals/guides/rings.

Well to be blunt here She is tired and one thing to keep in mind here D361 I H diesel engines do not take kindly to either and as a result you can knock the rings out of them . To make a D 361 a good starter you need compression , good injectors , good batterys and a good started to spin it over at the correct cranking speed , and injection pump that is in good shape to deliver correct cranking pressure to the injectors. Then there is the fact that the D 361 is not and engine to be rebuilt by a novice , it has a bunch of quarks that you have to pay attention to when building the engine , sleeves must be checked for wrinkling the block needs to be checked for being out of round before ya even try to PRESS in the sleeves line bore should be checked and addressed , crank needs to be checked for being out of round , head needs to be done correctly and valve protrusion must be set dead on along with a few other quarks . But when done correctly and broke in correctly they will run a long time . My own 806 D is coming up on 10000 hours and since i have owned it i have adjusted the valves once repaired a fuel leak on the pump , rebuild the starter due to slow cranking speed , put one new alt. on it and rewired the engine wiring harness and just put two new Firestone radials on the back. and a couple new seats over the years i have had it and she is plum ugly but runs like a scalded dog as it will pull 5x16 710 plow in low forth 8-10 inches deep and pull the 470 18 foot disc in high one up and down our humps and bumps with duals. also pulls our 18 foot H&S sliage wagons filled to the top . Ya want the old nag to run like new find and old I H mechanic to help ya rebuild her and it will outlast you.
