One 12 volt group 31 battery is all you need. Want your starter to crank like it has 2 batteries? Take out the armature and clean up the copper surfaces and contacts with light sandpaper or emory cloth, do the same to the rust on the magnets attached to the case. Remove the brush assemblies and free them up if they're stuck and if the brushes are worn get a $25 kit. You'll be amazed at how good it cranks. Makes no sense putting more juice on a 40+ year-old starter that is full of crud.
