Oliver 1755 Diesel Batteries

I need to get a battery or two for my 1755. I posted a week or more ago, and got a lot of good information. The manual I have says I need two 6 volt batteries in series. I was given a lot of advice, and have a few more questions. First, I was at Tractor Supply and saw their Exide batteries, two 6 volts. There is a 12 volt there the same size as two 6 volts stuck together. What is the advantage of the two 6 volts over the 12 volt beside 30 more CCA? (850 CCA for two 6 volt and 820 for one 12 volt). Or is there an advantage?

Also, many have said to have good cables, good connections. Is there a special cable for series hookup? All I can find so far is the ones with a post connection on one end and a tab on the other, for going over a bolt on the starter or the ground or whatever.

Thanks.

There is no advantage , just two more batt connections to go south just when you need the tractor the most. I had a dozen I-R air compressors with Deutz engines that came from the factory with two 6V's and as they failed , I changed them all to group 30H's same as the forklifts , never a problem .

How cold does it get where you live? Do you use the tractor when it's winter? Is it always parked in a heated shed or where it can be plugged in? If it's warm where you are, you would probably get by with a small 12 volt year around. If it's cold and less than ideal conditions, you need all the cca's you can get, don't shoot yourself in the foot for a few bucks now and regret it next winter. Chris

I changed my 1650 diesel over from 6V batteries to 12V after I got it and it cranks just fine.Think the batteries are around 1100 CCA amps each. All the others had already been changed over when I got them.

One 12 volt group 31 battery is all you need. Want your starter to crank like it has 2 batteries? Take out the armature and clean up the copper surfaces and contacts with light sandpaper or emory cloth, do the same to the rust on the magnets attached to the case. Remove the brush assemblies and free them up if they're stuck and if the brushes are worn get a $25 kit. You'll be amazed at how good it cranks. Makes no sense putting more juice on a 40+ year-old starter that is full of crud.

I have a brand new starter but 2 batteries will out crank 1 battery anytime especially in cold weather. The 1650 diesels aren't known for easy cold weather starting.BTW the new gear
reduction starter I have will out crank the original Oliver starters regardless of what you do to them and only cost $133.

$133 for a new starter is a sweet deal. But with the engine heater, rebuilt starter and a good batt my 1650 turns right over in the cold. Main thing for me is not having to mess with all of those cable connections and buy an extra battery every few years. If need more amps I have a start booster.

I have gone to a single 12 volt battery on a couple of older tractors that used to run two sixes in series. Less hassle with dirty cable ends , less expense. Even the old JD AR with a single 12 volt cranks over just fine to start. The Super 90 Massey needs a little pre heating with the coolant heater if it gets down near freezing but I run it all winter for cattle feeding and the single 12 volt battery never fails to start it. I use a big 12 on it.

When your 1755 was made, forty years ago, a 12 volt battery with 800+ CCA was not common, maybe not available yet.

I used 1 big--12 volt in the 1800 in front of the steering wheel never had a problem cranking over even below zero after the heater had been plugged in for an hour.

Grew up with and had an 1855, and then a 2-105 until last year. I always got the highest cranking amp single 12 volt battery I could. Plugged in and -20 out, cranked just fine every day in the winter no matter what, never had an issue.

Hello Up Oliver,

No contest CCA wins every time! With 12 volts there are less connections to content with if you go that route. The old 6 volts system cables will.work just fine!

Guido.

Hello:

It goes below 0 Fahrenheit here a lot, mostly teens. The tractor will be inside an unheated pole barn next year with a snowblower on it. But I will be able to plug it in.
