MANY things will grow under walnuts. Just look at a walnut grove and you will see. MANY things will NOT grow under walnuts and, of these, some are more sensitive than others. How do I know? I own hundreds of walnut trees. In fact our place is roughly divided north to south by what we call the first, second, and third lines of walnuts and east to west by what is known as "the old lane". The old lane is also loaded with walnuts. Some of these trees are very old. I like wild flowers and trees and I keep planting but I have to be careful where. It is always a risk to plant anywhere near a walnut. Some folks will tell you the drip line is safe, but not really. Best rule of thumb is, the further the better. By the by, hickories also produce juglone toxin and can harm your apple. They just don't produce as much.
