black walnut trees - how far away

I didn't see this on Ultradog's list of topics, but I bet someone here knows. ...
I have some black walnut trees in the general area I planted my daughter's apple tree. I thought I was far enough away (30'+) but the apple is now dead. Did the walnut kill it, or was it just one that didn't make it through transplanting abd the winter?

I would not plant any closer than 80-90ft. Even then depending on water shed the walnut could take out apple trees.

sounds like snake oil to me,.i've had gardens, apple, peach trees beside walnut with no affect,....i'd guess winter killed it. i lost couple last winter

Where we have small groves of walnut trees they eventually kill most other species out. A well fruited tree leaves a lot of debris on the ground.

Raspberries are the only thing I know that will do well under a Walnut.I had a couple Walnut tress about 50ft from one end of my garden and nothing ever did very well there cut down the Walnuts, subsoiled and its like the rest of my garden now.

MANY things will grow under walnuts. Just look at a walnut grove and you will see. MANY things will NOT grow under walnuts and, of these, some are more sensitive than others. How do I know? I own hundreds of walnut trees. In fact our place is roughly divided north to south by what we call the first, second, and third lines of walnuts and east to west by what is known as "the old lane". The old lane is also loaded with walnuts. Some of these trees are very old. I like wild flowers and trees and I keep planting but I have to be careful where. It is always a risk to plant anywhere near a walnut. Some folks will tell you the drip line is safe, but not really. Best rule of thumb is, the further the better. By the by, hickories also produce juglone toxin and can harm your apple. They just don't produce as much.

There are a few that will grow like hackberry and persimmon. There is great value to walnut lumber and I do have a nice grove with the hope of helping to pay for my son's college someday. From and economic standpoint walnuts are too slow growing and now thousand cankers disease is starting to kill them off. The toxin is deadly to about all fruit trees, maples, and birch. The toxin is produced by the roots and will remain in the soil long after the tree is cut.

Thirty feed is a pretty good distance away. It usually take a year or too for the toxin to kill a tree. If you just planted the tree this spring and it has just died, it probably was something else. Nathan

I used to use walnut hulls for mulch around trees. Got them for free from a local business who bought walnuts and hulled them. Never had any problems about killing anything. During a rain the ground would be stained.

See, I knew I could get answers here. :) Thanks, guys. Simply moving the tree farther away from the black walnuts would put it right where I drive to and from the machine shed. So I'm looking for a different spot...
