Hope you heal quick. 'Back surgery' is a kind of a generic term. One person's back surgery might be completely different from another person's back surgery so comparing apples to apples is kind of hard to do.
Geo-Th, I got the same reaction you had from a doctor. My back was hurting and one leg was numb. he kind of mumbled "you're not in a wheelchair, why are you here". He told me when field work is over next fall he'll put rods in. I didn't like him so I went to another doctor a friend recommended and he found the problem was in my neck and quite severe so I ended up having neck surgery instead. That solved the numbness problem.
