Had back surgery Wednesday, lower back 6" incision. Every think is going better than expected, turned 80 on 16th. Tractor related daughter came and mowed 12 acres of pasture this weekend.

I hope your recovery goes well and is greatly successful. My 70 year wife has had three back surgeries, the most recent one about 2 years ago. She has about 5 or 6 vertebrae fused with steel rods on each side of the spine. Her recoveries took quite a bit of time and they were painful, but she is much better off for having had the surgeries than she was and would have become if she hadn't had them
I hope all goes well for you. Be dogged about following the doctors directions and your physical therapy if you have any.

Some Dr's are changing their mind about back surgery. 71 year old Neighbor went to Dr to have surgery. Dr told his is you can walk in my office you don't need surgery. 11 years ago I refused to have L4 & L5 fused. From all the botched surgeries, I'm glad I didn't have it. Hope it works for your wife.
From what I've seen, many people have to have many surgeries until their spine is all fused. Some Dr's are saying after a few years, the pain returns. I'll put up with the pain and behave myself.

Hope you heal quick. 'Back surgery' is a kind of a generic term. One person's back surgery might be completely different from another person's back surgery so comparing apples to apples is kind of hard to do.
Geo-Th, I got the same reaction you had from a doctor. My back was hurting and one leg was numb. he kind of mumbled "you're not in a wheelchair, why are you here". He told me when field work is over next fall he'll put rods in. I didn't like him so I went to another doctor a friend recommended and he found the problem was in my neck and quite severe so I ended up having neck surgery instead. That solved the numbness problem.
