It's no worse than any other large city--try to avoid rush hour. By-pass adds a lot of distance, just go thru. I do it on I75 a couple of times a year. Depending on where you're are coming from consider US27-I10-Rt231 to I65, then North. Done that lots of time too, but you still have Montgomery, Nashville, Indianapolis, etc. No way to avoid all the cities.
