OT - Atlanta traffic

Is there any better alternate routes to get through Atlanta heading south on I-75? I've heard that I-285 is a killer. Heading to the Fort Myers, Fla. area.

Any route is ok if you time it for mid morning or early afternoon, or after 7pm. 6-9am, 11:30-1, or 3-6:30pm it won't matter what road you take.

Jon is correct. I really hate I85 and 285 during rush hours. Thankfully, we are 100 miles away and don't go through there very often.

I always tried to time it so I went through Atlanta late at night around midnight right through on I-75 shortest route when I used to go to Florida , traffic was pretty light and you get right through . But if you get there during high volume time there is no good way they will all be jammed . Last time I went to FL I avoided I-75 all together , spring break traffic is NUTS !

Prawn farmer,

Depending on where you are going to get onto I-75, you could have more problems than just Atlanta. Knoxville is a disaster. Chattanooga is no better. Atlanta is probably the worst of them, but any interstate is a mess when you try to get through a populated area.

Depending on how much time and patience you have, you might try taking some of the old US Highways and bypass as many of the cities as you can.

Good luck with your trip.

Just plan to go straight thru Atlanta. Try to arrive NLT 10:30 AM and you can sail right thru. I used to drive that same route about 15 times a year. Stay off the alternate routes, they are jammed all day long. Get in the center lane, ifyou have someone in the car with you , use the hove lane. No problems

Be sure to take a relief jug with you along with some water and snacks. The slightest little fender bender and the lazy cops like to just shut the road down for hours rather than put any effort into trying to direct traffic around it. I hope I never have have to go through that jungle again. TDF

Your solution is timing not route. As everyone has said time it right and go straight thru. Late like after 10 pm at night is best but 11 am to 2 pm will usually get you thru with out a lot of trouble. Alternate routes are mostly 2 lane and a crap shoot.

I've been through Atlanta twice in the last month...go straight through on 75, do not take by passes, they take you miles out of your way and are no faster..if there are two of you get in the HOV lane(Heavily-occupied vehicle) and you will drive right through easy as can be. I have hit Atlanta at rush hour and going in is fine, its the half coming out that gets slow, but all in all its not that bad,Saturday mornings,Sunday mornings or mid morning , mid afternoon, evenings after 7:30 all work well...Toronto is a lot worse!

I drive from Mi. to Jacksonville Fl a couple times a year. I started cutting over to 95 before Atlanta just to avoid that mess. Its about the same distance wise.

I would avoil Alanta during rush hour. Not exactly sure, but I was told if you have a large motor home, you should use the by-pass. Last time I went with cousin Eddie, we took his 40 ft diesel pusher down town, but it was at mid-night. Little traffic.

Everyone's comments appreciated. My wife and I have flown down there twice this year and rented a car. It looks like we'll be driving it every few weeks for a spell due to some elderly parents down there. The parent/child roles sure have flip-flopped over the past few months. Must be payback from my teenage years.

It's no worse than any other large city--try to avoid rush hour. By-pass adds a lot of distance, just go thru. I do it on I75 a couple of times a year. Depending on where you're are coming from consider US27-I10-Rt231 to I65, then North. Done that lots of time too, but you still have Montgomery, Nashville, Indianapolis, etc. No way to avoid all the cities.

Plan your drive through Atlanta on I-75 AFTER 10PM and BEFORE 6AM if it's a weekday. If it's a weekend, anytime is OK. Don't bother with I-285.
