: : Have a wonderful old Farmall 806 made sometime in the 1950's. Runs great and love it, but can't get it started anymore. It's suppose to be out of gear with clutch in to start. Believe the clutch is bad or the gears are so loose that you can't tell if it is in or out of gear. You can giggle the gears around and around until it finally catches, but it is taking longer and longer. Couple of years ago, someone told me Farmall IH had lots of trouble like this and that they made a kit to fix it. Anyone know anything about this problem? How to fix it? Is there a kit to fix it? If it takes a real mechanic to fix, about how much will it cost or how long should it take?

: Hi Woody, I'm not familiar with a farmall 806. It sounds like you are describing a safety switch that requires the transmission to be in neutral. My family has an old ford 3000 that had this problem. The switch just wore out. After getting tire of fooling around with it, we shorted it out and got back to work. That was about fifteen years ago. Good luck, Keith R.

Thanks Keith, for your suggestion. I've thought of this. I hope that is all there is that's wrong with the tractor. The guys that told me several years ago that the gear shift was a common problem with 806 threw me off this tract, so I thought I better get some input before shorting the safety. I've done that with several lawnmowers with success...I appreciate your idea! Thanks again, Woodie.

Today's Featured Article - The Rescue of a Fordson F - by Anthony West. Introduction I live in the UK and have for many years restored Fordson tractors (in the main model N's). I have also restored and shown model F's, E 27N's, Field Marshall Series 2, David Brown Cropmasters and the old rey Fergeson T 20. At one time I had seven restored examples which were shown and used in ploughing matches. As most restorers, I have a number of war stories I can relate on a range of topics that may help other like minded and interested people. Perhaps my first p ... [Read Article]
