Actually, not all that uncommon. Local consignment auction has to have a scrapper come in a couple weeks after every sale to take away all the stuff left behind, especially from the miscellaneous pallets. But it happens with implements, too- a part will be removed from an old mower conditioner, and the rest left there.
I bought a wide front for a JD 60 one time, for about $250.00, halfway across the country. I knew a guy who travelled the Midwest a lot, and he was going to stop at the place and pick it up. After I bought it, he skipped town (divorce problem), and then I sold the tractor the axle was for. So I just kind of forgot about it. Didn't need it, and didn't want to sound like I was welching on the deal.
Got a call from the seller a couple years later- he had someone there that wanted it, did I want to sell it? He'd refund my money, and keep the difference. Sounded good to me. A week later, I got a check. Good, honest guy- he could have just sold it, and I'd have been none the wiser.
