That Was A Weird Sale?!

Listen to this!

I had a guy call, and was looking for a few parts for a Farmall H (I have one I am parting out).

I told him I would sell him everything I had left for it, for $250, this INCLUDED the entire rearend, bellhousing, gas tank, steering shaft, dash, seat, brakes, axles, etc. No drawbar or frame.

PLUS the grill, damaged hood, radiator, frame rails, front end, other steering shaft, spindles, etc.

PLUS a box of things dash plate, gauge, few wheel clamps, etc.

I figured that it was a really good deal for his part, and that I should have asked a little more, BUT I told him $250, and he didn't haggle around with me, so I was cool with it...

He showed up, and first things first, I pick up the big chunk with the backhoe, and set it on his trailer.

I shut the backhoe off, because the rest can be loaded by hand. He started tying down the chuck, and was all set, and I was going to go back for more stuff, and he shook my hand, and said "thank a bunch! Have a good one!"

Then he went to get into his truck, and I said " welllll, what about the rest of the stuff???" he looked over his shoulder at the pile of parts about 30 feet away and said "I don't want any of that stuff" then without another word got in his truck and left!!??????

He had already paid me the $250 without question? What was the deal with that??? Fine with me, I guess, felt kind of bad though!!! What would you have done??????

Well that is all the better now you can sell off the rest and get even more. It will take more time and effort though.

Just what you did, then I would have sat down and relisted the rest of the stuff for $250 again. Evidently that was all he wanted and didn't want the rest of the plunder laying around.

Take the money and re-advertise whatever is left. He made his own decision; he's allowed to do that.

Just like Randy said. All the guy wanted was the rear end.Kind of like at an auction.Someone buys a 'pile' and leaves 3/4 of it there. All that was wanted was one or two items......Dont worry.Re list and sell whats left. Steve

Ya, thats the plan I suppose! :)

Don't mind at all that I will make some more money, BUT, I just thought, if that had been me, I would have taken everything, then turned around and sold what I didn't need to help out with the original purchase price... Oh well?!

One mans trash is anothers treasure right! :)

Well good for you, more money to be made!! I really enjoy reading about your travels. I started out young in this great hobby as well. I was 12 when I bought my first tractor (Farmall H) and am now 27. Where abouts do you live? I should know but can not remember right now. Im in Ohio and looking for a couple H items. Message me when you get a free moment. Thanks Matt

My wife went to a household /farm auction years ago. Came home and told me what she had bought, "We need to go pick it all up" So we go of course theyed lumped stuff together. Had an old chair, wifey says, " I got that too". We aren't taking that junk, " We've got to I bought it". Nope deary you take what you want and leave the rest. They would love you to haul all their junk away. Now she knows. gobble

That happens, he found what he wanted, left the remainder, which I would think over time, you can sell. One of the benefits, spares, sooner or later you may find someone needing something you have, its part of the hobby.

5 years ago, I spotted an ad for a pair of old Ford LGT's , a 12, and a 14, with K series Kohlers. One had the K321 motor I thought I needed. As part of the deal, I had to take both, but only needed one, or so I thought, the base of that K321 Kohler was wrong for the base plate I have on this old 14hp sawrig as its called. Sure I could have rigged something, but I really wanted the correct motor like what was on there. I actually needed a K321-"S", thought these were all the same, ( definitely not LOL!). I later found one for $50, and have yet to get rid of the LGT's, though the one was a runner, might rig up a planter on that one. A lot of the spares from this deal could be useful and get some or all of what I paid back. I think most of these things work out in some way or another, just not right away.

I'm sure everyone has had it happen. I bought a box of stuff at an auction and this box had one or two things I wanted. Afterwards several folks walked up to me and bought several of the items I didn't want. By the time it was done, my box was free and made some extra besides.

You got the opposite of that. Guy bought and took what he wanted and left the rest. Now you just need to find the buyers for the rest of the "box"

My first thought is you tried to get him to take the rest of what you had. He told you he didn't want it so as far as your dealings with him you are good.

Really sounds like a odd deal. Couple of possibilities.

Idea one. He is doing up his one and only tractor and just needed something from what you had loaded. Will junk the rest and would have junked everything else had he taken it.

Idea two. Slightly more nefarious, has a tractor without a tag and didn't know there were easier ways to get one than taking the whole tractor.

He wasn't a junker or someone doing a yard ornament. I would likely think they would also have taken the whole shebang.

Hoping he paid in cash. If not he left all the fast mover high dollar parts so either way you came out pretty good on this deal.

Some days are like that.

I had a guy drive up from Atlanta, GA for a IH grain binder he bought over email. Fair bit more money and it included a pallet of parts and three parts machines. I don't think he even took the pallet of parts and he did have room for that. The parts machines were not much but he looked and that was about it. So it does happen.

I would imagine that he just did not want the rest of the stuff. My cousin wrecked his 'Vette in about '72 and it sat in our machine shop for a couple years. He sold it, when the guy came to get it my sister handed him the title, the guy thanked us, got in his car and left! Wonder what that was about??? It sat for another year or two and got sold for parts, wish it was still there 'cause it wasn't hurt very bad at all.

There is an "estate" seller in the area that uses the auction to clear the place out for her customer. The sales are usually the dwelling of the deceased and the family wants the place cleaned out to sell. Runs a silent auction, you walk about the place writing your bid on paper at each item, from Friday morning until Saturday mid-day. Saturday afternoon the buyers must have everything bought removed. The auction company then goes in and lots everything up Saturday evening/Sunday morning for a live auction, and I mean everything. They will even hold desirable stuff back to lot up with the garbage for sunday, and I'm not talking about "one mans trash anothers treasure", I'm talking about refuse, trash, crap, garbage. They stipulate everything in the lot must be removed before they start the live auction and hold people to it, a lot usually will occupy half of a pick-up truck bed. . Monday morning they send in someone to hit the floors a bit and send the sellers a bill for the service, buyers pay 8% premium. They advertise about 3 sales a month, one was all I needed to see.

Probably one of those Henpecked fellows who has a wife that would make life miserable for him if he had some 'junk' lying around.I've made a lot of
$$$ over the years off those types selling them back parts that I bought from them that they got rid of 'to make the Mrs
happy' of course it was futile on their part as the Mrs will most likely never be happy. The only one happy was me(LOL)
He'll be back to buy some of the parts he left most likely.

I've had a couple buyers come for items, for example an item I'm selling for $75. They hand me $80. I say one minute and I'll get your change and they say forget it. I say fair is fair I'll get your change but they say that's alright and drive off. Kinda makes up for the guy that shows up for the $75 item then say's how about $70. Nope this is worth more than $75 and it's only been on CL for 1/2 day. They say ok then pick through their pockets and say I only have $73.47. Yes, I take their last penny. But frankly I figure it's a ploy and they probably have a sack of $100s in the glove box. Told one old guy I only took cash on the phone. He got through loading and turns to his wife and says write the guy a check. Geesh, well they looked honest and it wasn't a large sum. I didn't say anything but I did take their plate number down. It was good.

I've done similar things. Sometimes you kill yourself looking for a part you really need, but can only find it for lots of money, and far away.

Then suddenly you get lucky and find somebody local with exactly what you need, and their asking price is far lower than anything you've seen yet.

So - he takes just what he needs, pays less than he expected, everybody wins.

Can't believe I'm saying this - but sometimes you really don't want extra parts because you know you'll never use them.

You did well , all he wanted was what he took . My buddy sold a TDB to a guy 8 years ago cash money . The dozer it still sitting beside his shed and he's tried a million differnt ways to contact the owner . He pushes manure with it just so it won't seize . Figures the owner is dead ?

I've got over two thousand dollars worth of parts and stuff i've sold on ebay and other places that people paid for and never picked up.

Actually, not all that uncommon. Local consignment auction has to have a scrapper come in a couple weeks after every sale to take away all the stuff left behind, especially from the miscellaneous pallets. But it happens with implements, too- a part will be removed from an old mower conditioner, and the rest left there.

I bought a wide front for a JD 60 one time, for about $250.00, halfway across the country. I knew a guy who travelled the Midwest a lot, and he was going to stop at the place and pick it up. After I bought it, he skipped town (divorce problem), and then I sold the tractor the axle was for. So I just kind of forgot about it. Didn't need it, and didn't want to sound like I was welching on the deal.

Got a call from the seller a couple years later- he had someone there that wanted it, did I want to sell it? He'd refund my money, and keep the difference. Sounded good to me. A week later, I got a check. Good, honest guy- he could have just sold it, and I'd have been none the wiser.

It is a fact of life that some folks have more money than time- he probably figured your price was OK for just the part that he wanted, and he had neither the time nor the inclination to go into the parts business with the rest of it.
