I would agree with the computer issue. We had a 2006 Ford Freestyle. I believe the computer on it was "reflashed" over 15 times the 4 years we owned it.
One day it refused to start and Ford hauled it back to their shop. They spent 3 days checking everything from compression to the COPS and finally out of despiration they reloaded the computer program (flashed) - something that had a done a few weeks earlier on another warranty trip - and fired up and ran like a charm. Traded it on a Kia Minivan and never looked back.
