I knew we were in a period of decreased solar activity but wasn't sure how far in. Think about it. The sun can warm us from the low 50s into the hundreds in a few hours. Why wouldn't solar activity have an effect on weather patterns and average temperatures? It's what drives the weather. No sun no weather. Earth would (relatively) quickly become a cold dead rock floating through space without the energy from the sun. The only reason we have hydrocarbons for fuel is that some plant used solar energy to grow. Oil is little more than a battery for the storage of solar energy. Solar activity even affects radio communications. Increased solar activity energizes the ionosphere, when it's energized it reflects radio waves back down to earth, allowing for "skip", which allows a regular old cb radio to talk to another one across a continent or on the other side of an ocean.
