NEVER change part before you do that trouble shooting or you add to the problem not fix it. #1 you check for spark. You need a good blue/white spark that jumps a 1/4 inch gap or more. No spark check the points and make sure you have a spark at the point when you open and close them by hand. No spark clean the points and check again. Also make sure you have power to the coil since no power means no spark. No power try a hot wire from the battery to the coil ignition side and see if you have spark.
