I think those "filler" channels are so that comedians like Jerry Clower can say "I've got 2,000 channels, and they call me a hick?" I saw that one, and I almost swallowed my teeth that someone could say that their channel count determines their level of sophistication......
On a lighter note, I have been using a converter box and a small antenna for the local channels and news, and Netflix for programming content. Nice thing about Netflix - you can watch whatever you want (that they have), no commercial interruptions, can pause, repeat, replay, and even take a break to go to the kitchen for a snack or whatever. You won't get the latest episode of Gold Rush, but there is so much to choose from that it would take several lifetimes to see it all. Now, I can catch up on all of the old TV shows that I missed over the years!
