I bought one for the wife a few years ago. She couldn't shift it for anything. She was putting just way too much effort in to it. She was getting sideways on the seat and grunting and straining at it. I had to show her that if you just ease up,you can shift it with one finger and thumb or the palm of your hand. The shift is spring loaded and centers itself. Let it center,then gently move it either toward the front of the tractor,or toward the rear.
