Super 55' arrives to my home.

New here at the cool sight, just inherited my pops super 55' from my mother, as he has not been with us for 9 years now. Engine runs real good but of the 6 gears it only has about 3 forward gears and no reverse. Looks like I'll be asking a few questions from you Oliver mechanics. Thank you.... :?:

Are you certain you are shifting it right. Some of those old olivers have TWO neutrals. One gives access to three gears then the other on two gears and reverse. Sounds like you just need to com down to the second neutral but then it is your tractor and you should know how to drive it. Good luck but check it out before you go to tearing it down.

Welcome ol55, if you didn't know there is also an Oliver Cletrac discussion forum on this site. If you are on modern view go to select a forum and click on it. If you are on classic view go to discussion forum and click on that. Its been over thirty years since I was on my ex father in laws super 55 but I know it was a dependable, handy little tractor. Greg

if THE SHIFT/GEAR location tag is gone; be aware that that model had double "H" pattern. 3 forwards and reverse; thru a long neutral in the center of those gears; to 3 more forwards and reverse. reverse in both are to the left and back toward the rear tires. May take a while to find all the neutral positions.

I bought one for the wife a few years ago. She couldn't shift it for anything. She was putting just way too much effort in to it. She was getting sideways on the seat and grunting and straining at it. I had to show her that if you just ease up,you can shift it with one finger and thumb or the palm of your hand. The shift is spring loaded and centers itself. Let it center, then gently move it either toward the front of the tractor,or toward the rear.

No, you know I used to drive this tractor for my dad years ago before I started working for Lockheed Martin and yes I know How to shift it. Over the years my mother just let anybody run it and I think that's where the problem could be. My dad farmed almonds in southern California about 75 miles from Bakersfield, he had 2 Super 55's and sold actually the better one of the 2. My brother and I cultivated forever it seemed like, with those 2 tractors, anyway I don't want to tear into it but it seems to have something wrong there in the gear box somewhere. Thanks for the replys....

If you look at anything, remove the gear shift lever and take a flashlight and see if the neutral slot on all 3 shift rails line up. If not take a good long screw driver and get them to line up and then replace the gear shift so it is in the middle slot.

We had a much older, 39 I think "70" that only had 1, 2, 5 and low reverse. 3, 4, 6 and high reverse did not work. Dad took the top of the transmission off and got a few parts from the Ollie dealer, put them in, took it out with a load of manure and the same gears failed to work after a little incident. He gave up on it and we had a 3 speed until it went to town with a 2MH IHC cornpicker in trade for an Oliver picker sheller. That turned him off of green paint for the last almost 50 years

another thing I forgot to mention was, what type of grease (oil) does the trans take and what level do I fill it to? Thanks for all the the replys, I will check the 3 shift rails....

You will need a 5 gallon pail of 80W-90 gear oil. I think it will take all of but about a quart. There are 3 drain plugs. Check plug is a 3/8 inch pipe plug on the back of the tractor near the PTO shaft. You need an operators manual. J.

After pulling the shifter out and looking down inside at the 3 shifter rails it seems really easy to move the inbd. and out board rails to line up but the middle one does not see to seem to move back at all. Maybe try to jack up the rear tires and rotate them a bit? Anyway thought I'd bring this across to J. Schwiebert..... Thank you for the help and replys..
