Toyota T-case can't be shifted to different ranges for each output, reduction box is in the front before the transfer box.
The sprag/dog what ever that drive the front axle will not cause windup in the driveline. If its too worn it can skip. If your brother was turning on a hard surface its normal for that to bind and you will have trouble disengaging.
