Toyota HI LUX 4WD

Got a 1995 used Toyota HI LUX 4WD. Shift to 4wd acts like front & rear are out of time. Have to back up to disengage front end. Tires are correct size & all same brand. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks,
Ted

Is there a chance the drive shaft u-joints are not at the same bend. I am talking about the yoke. If someone had replaced the end. Happen to me years ago on a IHC pickup.

If the shifting forks in the transfer case get broken or messed up you can be in high range in one end and low range in the other end.

I'm not sure if it can happen in this truck, I know for certain that it can happen in other ones!

One tire MAY be "out of spec" or mis-marked. Wouldn't be the first time that has happened.

Did you just buy the truck? There's nothing that can just "change" on its own and cause such a mismatch. And if it was tires - it would need to be a pretty big difference. Are you sure those automatic hubs are just slipping and jerking around? That is common. If you just got it and the problem is new to you - maybe somebody changed the gear ratio in one differential and now it does not match the other. By the way - how come it's a "Hi Lux." Are you in some country other then the USA?

Same thing happened to me on a Chevy full sized Blazer once.

The front driveshaft was included but not installed when I bought it. The owner told me he'd had to replace the front axle on a trip and hadn't gotten around to installing the driveshaft. As soon as I installed the driveshaft I knew something was out of whack. The rear was 3:54 and the front he'd installed was 3:07.

Since rear axles were half the price of fronts, and 3:07's were more common and economical, I changed the rear to match the front.

I straightened the axles out, did some tinker work, and doubled my money on the thing.

Thank you for all the suggestions. Actually it belongs to my brother. His wife works in the US Embassy in Zimbabwa ,Africa. Not sold in the US. Owners manual is in Japanese. They just bought it from a former Embassy person. I need to find more about it. He just happened to turn it on going down the road. Not sure what it would do in conditions where you needed it. Not on a hard surface. Will get more info. Ian What is the FWD dog clutch?
Again thanks everyone for the help.

Given the location, even more likely to have mismatched ratios.

Toyota T-case can't be shifted to different ranges for each output, reduction box is in the front before the transfer box.

The sprag/dog what ever that drive the front axle will not cause windup in the driveline. If its too worn it can skip. If your brother was turning on a hard surface its normal for that to bind and you will have trouble disengaging.
