Yeah, I mostly use patterns from books, but I will occasionally make my own pattern on the computer from a still image, and even more rarely free hand one. Though usually you have to decide what details you want to modify or scrap based on the pumpkin you are working with, as well as the fact that the stencil is flat and square and the pumpkins are round and bumpy!
