Here is the deal, for the same diameter, width, and belt tension, laminated paper/wood will give you between 35% and 50% more power transmission than cast iron before excessive slip. This meant that the tractor company could make the pulley smaller in diameter and also make the output bevel gear smaller in diameter for the same belt SFM (surface feet per minute) and load. This made packaging the belt pulley easier and decreased the internal volume of the gear box which surrounded the belt pulley bevel gears. The result was a more compact tractor which was slightly cheaper and easier to build.
