Belt Pulleys

Steel vs composite ( I'm not sure if they are paper or leather). It seems to me that most Case used steel, my Farmall H has a composite. Does anyone know if one was better than the other?

It didn't seem to make any difference as long as the tractor pulley was aligned right with the pulley being driven and the belt was reasonable tightened.

Steel doesn't deteriorate over time like the composite pulleys.

the steel ones will have a tendancy to slip a bit on a heavy pull on start up. belt dressing cures this.

Steel can be left on for decades with no problem. Paper needs to be covered or taken off or they deteriorate. The paper ones seem to pull a little better but it's not a big difference.

Here is the deal, for the same diameter, width, and belt tension, laminated paper/wood will give you between 35% and 50% more power transmission than cast iron before excessive slip. This meant that the tractor company could make the pulley smaller in diameter and also make the output bevel gear smaller in diameter for the same belt SFM (surface feet per minute) and load. This made packaging the belt pulley easier and decreased the internal volume of the gear box which surrounded the belt pulley bevel gears. The result was a more compact tractor which was slightly cheaper and easier to build.
