As long as you (or anybody else) will continue to finance his irresponsibility, it will continue. It simply becomes a pattern, and those that "bail him out" will simply become enablers. My vote would be to tell him that he made the problem, so he can figure out how to deal with it. Today, it is the rent. Tomorrow it may be the car payment, an overdue fine, or a gambling debt. When there are no consequences to bad behavior, it becomes the normal expected behavior, eh?
