A .357 handy but also a Mossberg 500 12ga (the "Chevy" of shotguns) on a different level. Prefer the 12 gauge because the business end is so big and scary there's a good chance you won't need to use it. Wife wasn't too keen on the idea (way back when) until there was a home invasion nearby with a shoot out and swarms of state police (and some kind of paramilitary group) trampling through the property and neighborhood searching all night. Now she's a believer.
