there a special tool that you need to remove the top cover so you dont loses reverse when and if you removed top cover if the reverse shifter shaft came out with top cover you well need to remove fuel tank to get it right as there is a key in shaft. now to hold the tension on spring detent rollers there also a special tool which i prompley trowed in the trash, what i did and still do is look at the under side of cover you well see a knot protrusion that about a inch long i drill a small hole in it big enough to hold a16penny nail pull the shift mechanizes tight slip the nail in install top cover then pull the nail out fill hole with silicone
