I used to put homemade flat beds on my pickups. The one I built was made of new pine 2x8's. When I finished I put used oil on it. It soaked in real good. After about 5 yrs the truck went sour, so we took the bed off and made it into a porch for a vacation cabin. 10 yrs later it was removed by next occupant.
