You insert the string under the ring, then wrap tight coils of the string over the knuckle. Hold that end tightly and pull end you inserted under ring and unwrap the coils. If the ring is not smooth and even all the way around (like a ladies huge engagement ring) it may not work well. First time I knew dad did this was when the local implement dealer was trying to cut a washer off a young kids finger. Dad came in, saw what they were doing, says hold every thing, ran over to the grocery store next door for a length of string and had that washer off in a few minutes. Kid no worse for wear.
