I am not familiar with "ground wasps". Are these solid color or yellow and black striped? If they are yellow and black, they are what we call "Yellow Jackets", they build in the ground where trees or roots have rotted out. They build a paper nest similar to a regular wasps nest, only underground and sometimes they will look like a stack of pancakes. Little devils are bad around here this year and they can set up residence in just a little while as I discovered the other day when I mowed over one that had not been there the week before.
