rim-type sprockets have "pockets" or slits for the drive teeth (that stick out below the chain) to fit down into. When there is an extreme amount of wear on this type of sprocket, the drive teeth cut out the metal between the "pockets" & leave a grove in the middle of the sprocket so that nothing drives the chain any longer unless there is no load on it.
