Husqvarna chainsaw question

Got my Husqvarna 50 chain saw out today to cut down some dead pine trees in my yard.It hadn't been used in a couple years, but with some new gas it started right up.I went to cut a tree and the chain stopped moving. I messed with the bar safety kick back thing but nothing worked. Is there a clutch behind those flyweights on the crankshaft? Thanks.

Yes,runs fine.It cut for a few seconds,a noise was coming from the right side. The chain runs with no load.

Could be the clutch shoes are stuck or it could be the chain brake lock broke and is stopping it. Take the side cover off and look around. If the chain brake band isn;t letting go of the clutch drum then that's the problem If the chain brake band isn't a problem, you need to look at the clutch next. Could be a busted sprocket or rim drive too.

Sounds like clutch is bad.I had one put on my 50 special years ago . If Iam not mistaken the new clutch includes a new sprocket.

The flyweights are the clutch. They sling out inside the drum and turn the sprocket which moves the chain. Most likely the sprocket stripped or broke off the clutch drum. Should come apart easily, probably a snap ring or bolt in the middle. Take it off and will be obvious what's wrong. Easy fix.

rim-type sprockets have "pockets" or slits for the drive teeth (that stick out below the chain) to fit down into. When there is an extreme amount of wear on this type of sprocket, the drive teeth cut out the metal between the "pockets" & leave a grove in the middle of the sprocket so that nothing drives the chain any longer unless there is no load on it.
