I would try replacing the video card. Chances are the adapter is on the motherboard, but you should be able to plug in a third-party video card to take its place. Because the prices of video cards drop rapidly, you can buy a card that was introduced a year or two ago for fifty bucks, yet it will be much more powerful than what you have in your four year old computer.
Cleaning out all the dust is a good idea. Video adapters generate a lot of heat. Be sure and clean out the CPU and GPU (Graphics Processing Unite) heat sinks. I try to clean out mine once a year.
