At 30,000 plus feet without oxygen and very warm clothing there is little chance of survival if any. Plus the passengers would have to wear the chutes or be strapped into seats equipped with chutes for it to maybe saving even one life. And that's all depending if any passengers would survive the initial explosion. Most likely they were all dead before they hit the ground.
In the news this morning the FAA warned US pilots to avoid flying over that area a few days before. The international aviation people also issued a warning to airlines about flying in that area.
We don't know who fired the missile yet. It could be the rebels, the Ukrainian military trying to stir the world against the rebels or even Russia itself trying to stir the pot for whatever reason.
The "black box" is examined by the aviation authority in whatever country a plane goes down in unless that country request assistance with it. Besides, the box is only important when trying to figure out what happened when the cause of an accident is unknown.
