My first hot lunch was in 1955 in grade school after the one room schools consolidated grades. We had an exceptionally good farm cook that made most everything homemade, including homemade light rolls. It was exceptionally good. Like someone stated below you could eat till it was gone. It did kind of ruin us though as we advanced up into high school the lunches didn't get bad, but quality and quantity did suffer some. It was still worth the price, which if I remember right was 25 or 30 cents a day. Sure beat carrying a lunch everyday. Most everybody ate the hot lunches, but a small few did bring a sack lunch.
