In the 1950s our threshing crew used a "D" JD to power the thresher. The tractor did not have a muffler...just a straight pipe shooting left and forward.
Some of the "bundle wagon" drivers used horses. It was fun for this kid to watch the reaction of the right-hand horse as it pulled along the left side of the D heading to the thresher. One of the hot blasts of exhaust would hit the horse in the butt and that horse was trying mightily to set a new speed record!!! LA in WI
