Ice and those always work better for me than pain killers, muscle relaxers when I hurt my back (often)
couple tips, besides the normal lift with your legs thing,
Always look up at the sky at the start of the lift.
If you are bent way over and can't, even looking up with just your eyes helps. (try to look at your eyebrows)
It's all connected inside.
And if you are right handed, you will find that you always put your right foot forward to plant when lifting. After a lifetime, it will be a weak link. Try to plant your left foot forward sometimes.
It won't 'feel' right but changes the strain applied.
