50 lb feed sack whooped my butt

Friday, I was filling the hog feeder with a half ton in 50 lb sacks. Along about #12, I felt a pop in my lower back. Ever since then, anything I do is pure torture.

I've had lower back pain since before I got out of the Navy, but had been doing pretty good for the last few years. I drove back to the feed store and ordered a 3-ton portable grain bin with built in auger.

Dan T,
I feel your pain, I too have a strong mind but a weak back,or vice versa. I had back brace many moons ago, looked like a womans corset with a bunch of metal staves you put in it. Most uncomfortable contraption man has ever devised, but it worked. Ain't getting old fun???
Regards,
LOU

Strongly recommend that you see your local Physician and request that an MRI be done of your lower back, it's possible that you MAY have a Herniated Disc.

I have THREE, L3-4, L4-5, L5-S1 and they are NO fun! Permanent sciatica in the left leg 24/7 , and the disc at L4-5 went IN and crushed the spinal cord to less than the diameter of a pencil, leaving me permanently partially paralyzed from the waist down.

Through years of therapy I've learned to make accommodations for my disability, but I DO NOT consider myself disabled. I function as normally as anyone else (within limitations).

:>)

Get that back checked out. I had to have surgery on my back due to loosing the use of my left leg and even then I am in pain 24/7 but at least can not walk and do things

BTDT L4-L5 and L5-S1 herniated discs with bi-lateral neural interference. The last time it was this bad, I was put on a NSAID for so long that when I finally weaned myself off the drugs, I'd became allergic to aspirin, Motrin, etc. I'm already taking Tylenol. Narcotics are out of the question as I need to operate machinery to do my job. Since the VA has a record of throwing pills at the problem, that doesn't leave many options.

Dan,

For most of my adult life I have scoffed at chiropractors thinking that they were quacks. I still think that many of their claims are ridiculous. (A friend of mine was taking his 7 year old son to a chiropractor to have him cured from bed-wetting! - Quack.)

In a move of desperation a few years ago, when my lower back was killing me, a friend of mine made an appointment at a chiropractor for me and then told me, "Don't embarass me by failing to show up for this appointment". I went - grudgingly. That guy fixed me in one treatment. I went back for a few more just to humor him, but I was greatly better after one or two treatments.

Some years passed and I was hurting again. Went to a different chiropractor (I had moved to another state), and he too, fixed me right up.

I said all of that to say this, if you haven't considered a chiropractor, you might want to.

Good luck,

Tom in TN

I'll be the first to say that some chiropractors are quacks and some are quite good at what they do.
Quite a few years ago, I went to one who wanted me to be there once a week....for forever. That didn't sit well with me. I have a nephew who treats a person a couple of times and tells them that if they feel fine that they don't have to come in any more.
There's also a local old chiropractor who had a large-brested (his words) woman come in and said that she was going to have breast reduction surgery because her back always hurt so bad and had for years. He openly told her that he he hated to see a set of good breasts wasted (again, his words), and had her open her mouth. He looked in and told her that she needed a tooth pulled. She went to her dentist and he also agreed that the same tooth needed to be pulled. Afterwards, she didn't have back problems anymore.
Bottom line, check out a chiropractor if you need to, but if you don't feel comfortable with what he tells you, don't go back.

I agree to get it checked out by either a chiropractor or doctor. There are good and there are not so good chiropractors. They have limitations to what they can do for you, the same as doctors. They can only help your body heal to the extent it will heal to. Some people I know have went to one once or twice and said it didn't help, but if you haven't been to one in years or never, your body has adjusted its self to compensate for the injury. The majority of the time, muscles tighten up to protect the injured area and the unfortunate side affect is pain. You may have pulled something with twisting, hopefully that is all it is.

Dad went to one years ago when he got to the point he was hurting too bad to even walk. Doc laid him out and started doing his thing. Dad said that while the man was feeling up and down his back he hit one area and said, "I bet you suffer from migraine headaches." Sure enough Dad had them quite often at the time. He said the Doc kep doing his adjustments and as part of them spent a little time on that one particular spot. From then on Dad went for years and years without having a migraine. That was probably 30 years ago. Nowdays he might get one once in a blue moon, but they are nothing like what he used to routinely suffer through.

Personally one has been able to help me with problems with my neck. Between showing me exercises to do in the shower to loosen muscles stiffened by the problem, and getting me to start sleeping with a therapeutic pillow that supported my neck, I haven't had to go back to him in nearly 10 years.

The Spine Center,Washington University, St. Louis MO Going on 13 years since my L-5 and sacrum became one happy chunk of bone.

I spent a lot of money over the years at chiropractors for my lower back.
I finally reached a point where they couldn't fix it any more.
So I had to do something else or quit working.
I went to am orthopedic surgeon expecting the worst.
They perscribed a medication called Methocarbamol.
It is not a muscle relaxer but an anti spasm drug.
About two or three times per year I will get a kink in my back that used to put me flat out for a few days. Now when I feel it coming on I start taking the metho and can keep going - stiff and sore but going. It also reduces the duration of the kink. I kind of OD on the stuff for a couple of days - take twice the perscribed amount.
Ask about it.
For me it has been a wonder drug.

plus 1 on the anti-spasm meds.
Ice and those always work better for me than pain killers, muscle relaxers when I hurt my back (often)

couple tips, besides the normal lift with your legs thing,
Always look up at the sky at the start of the lift.
If you are bent way over and can't, even looking up with just your eyes helps. (try to look at your eyebrows)
It's all connected inside.
And if you are right handed, you will find that you always put your right foot forward to plant when lifting. After a lifetime, it will be a weak link. Try to plant your left foot forward sometimes.
It won't 'feel' right but changes the strain applied.

Find a good chiropractor. Mine will readily admit there is a point beyond which he can't help you and that some things are best left to medical doctors. He also wants xrays before he even touches you. Both he and I agree that there are just as many MD quacks out there that are just going though the motions as quack Chiropractors. At one point I was going 2-3 times a week and we got a lot of problems fixed. But, I worked just down the street from his office 5 days a week. Now it's a major disruption to get to town at all, much less 2-3 times a week. But I felt great! Not so much now.

Let my back muscles get out of shape and suffered a similar back issue when loading 75 lb suit case weights on the tractor. Couldn't hardly breathe or sit in a chair so gave in and went to the Doc. He also perscribed the same or similar anti-spasm drug. Worked great but would caution it isn't a good idea to jump back into the fray for a couple of days.
