Had an alternator rebuilt, shortly later the voltage regulator failed. Worked fine, except that when vehicle was off, standing, and a door was opened, the regulator would sense the voltage drop from the courtesy lights going on, and would energize the field coil in the alternator. Happened with wife at work several times, before I figured that one out. Alternator went back to rebuilder twice and got two new VRs before I scrounged my old one out of his scrap bucket. Putit back in and worked fine. Rebuilder had got a handful of defective VRs.
