A little O/T question

A friend has a 200? 1 ton truck the kills the battery in about 2-3 days. Brand new battery and has tried 3 of them. Any how I played with it a little tonight. With the + battery cable off and you hook a meter from the cable to the battery you get battery voltage. So ya there is a draw but he also has a clock and a brake box for a trailoer so ya it should have a little draw. I also tried to do a amp reading and my meter can read up to 10 amps so with the cable off and hooked up from the cable to the battery you get a reading of 0.04 amps which should not be enough to drain the battery. So I'm I doing this test right or am I lost on this one?
Thanks

If you leave it hooked up and the alternator is warm next day it or the regulator is the problem. Had both on 91 fords.

Old sometimes the Diodes in the alternator will go bad and let the battery discharge , but the alternator will still charge . I have a 48-2 Ton chev that does that just put a battery disconnect switch on it .

Had an alternator rebuilt, shortly later the voltage regulator failed. Worked fine, except that when vehicle was off, standing, and a door was opened, the regulator would sense the voltage drop from the courtesy lights going on, and would energize the field coil in the alternator. Happened with wife at work several times, before I figured that one out. Alternator went back to rebuilder twice and got two new VRs before I scrounged my old one out of his scrap bucket. Putit back in and worked fine. Rebuilder had got a handful of defective VRs.

Get a diagram of the truck wiring and analyze it. My 1991 Ford had a bad EEC relay, would let the fuel pump run even with engine off. Wouldn't show on ammeter unless you happened to catch it right when the pressure switch called for fuel. A wiring diagram let me trace it down. Good luck, Old

Old,
The obvious test you seem to have omitted is to check if the generator is charging the battery when running. If it isn"t and he is doing multiple starts, using lights etc, THAT is the problem. If it discharges while just being left (no usage), that is a different matter, but from what you have told us I am guessing (ie not enough information).

I did that one also when running across the battery you get around 14 volts so yep the alternator is working. Sorry for not putting that in

If you pull the fuses and still have the problem that just means it is up stream of the fuses. That should eliminate all the instruments, brake lights etc. I agree with the guy on the alternator being bad. I had that problem on an 87 model chevy this year.

Is he leaving the key in the ignition? My mom's 03 Buick, Dad's 05 F-150, and brother's 06 Ram 2500 Cummins will all kill the battery within a couple of days if you leave the key in the ignition. Gotta pull it and put it in the console...

Unhook the alternator and see if you lose the draw. Could be the isolation diode in the alternator.
