It was a whirring, like a rough bearing. The sound is the same if in neutral. It knocked loud yesterday, which made me really worry.
The tractor had sat for many years and had a lot of water in the transmission, actually ice in the winter. The input bearing was rough and I replaced it, the others felt good. That shaft is a real bugger to work on.

On a side note, the engine starts right up, and runs great. I have an idea on how to fit up the air cleaner. I am going to vent the crankcase into it, an oil bath air cleaner should not get fouled by any blow by.
