Bad News on MH44

Jim,

It was a whirring, like a rough bearing. The sound is the same if in neutral. It knocked loud yesterday, which made me really worry.

The tractor had sat for many years and had a lot of water in the transmission, actually ice in the winter. The input bearing was rough and I replaced it, the others felt good. That shaft is a real bugger to work on.

I have the shift cover off now, and all feels good in there. I will pull the main cover tomorrow and look there.

On a side note, the engine starts right up, and runs great. I have an idea on how to fit up the air cleaner. I am going to vent the crankcase into it, an oil bath air cleaner should not get fouled by any blow by.

David I know you and you are going to fix it but I pulled a old 44 that had roughly 85hp for years with a noisy transmission. Tor it down tow times and never could find the source. I ran lucas oil treatment in the transmission and lived with the noise for several years , of course only pulling 5 to 10 times a month. Like the progress and yes the crank vent will work back to the high side of the breather.
