10SI Delco with proper installation and good wiring and connections is very dependable. I, myself prefer the 3 wire setup.
He has a magneto, so his on-off switch is a grounding kill switch so no switched 12 volts to excite the #1 pin on alternator.
Some options to excite the #1 pin would be a momentary push button to apply voltage, but would have to remember to press it each time you start the engine. Could also use an oil pressure activated switch, or a double pole-double throw toggle switch with one side activating the alternator in run position and other side to ground the mag in stop position. Caution on this is that switch could get bumped on with engine not running and damage the alternator.
