It is very well documented that young inexperienced drivers are FAR FAR more likely to have a problem when there is a passenger in the car. As a result many more responsible parents don't allow passengers in the first six months or a year. So sure you can say that this is just kids, but in reality passengers still distract, but maturity makes it less of a problem, but still a problem.
