The weed you pictured is called Henbit (Lamium amplexicaule). It is a very common springtime annual weed in yards, fields, etc. I am not familiar with anything called purple longstrife, but there is a purple loosestrife that is a very pernicious weed, particularly in the upper midwest. It grows up to 5ft tall or so and prefers wetter areas, not open fields. Loosestrife is perennial and blooms in late summer. Your county ag extension agent can give you much more detailed information and guide you through effective controls if needed.
