no, not that kind,...can anyone tell me if this is "purple longstrife". it is very prolific here,..all the pics I find of purple longstrife are much taller plants. this plant grows about 5 to 6 inches tall and covers entire fields, and has the purple flowers. anyone know what it is ??

The weed you pictured is called Henbit (Lamium amplexicaule). It is a very common springtime annual weed in yards, fields, etc.
I am not familiar with anything called purple longstrife, but there is a purple loosestrife that is a very pernicious weed, particularly in the upper midwest. It grows up to 5ft tall or so and prefers wetter areas, not open fields. Loosestrife is perennial and blooms in late summer.
Your county ag extension agent can give you much more detailed information and guide you through effective controls if needed.

Purple loosetrife is an invader that crowds out better plants, like cattails. It is very common throughout Michigan. Last I knew, they were working on biological controls aka insects imported from somewhere. The larva feed on the blooms as I recall.
