I would go ahead and take that rear axle housing off the main case to replace the gasket in that area it is a high potential leak area.
When I paint rims I stand them up on some bars c clamped to saw horses or something similar that way I can do the complete rim all at one time as it is easily rotated on the bars. Doesn't leave much of a mark on the edge and mounting the tires will mark them a little anyhow.
