I just finished "The Forgotten 500", about a daring rescue of downed airmen in Yugoslavia in WWII. Bombers would get shot up while raiding the oil refineries in Romania and crews would have to bail out over occupied Yugoslavia.
Another good read is "Iron Coffins" By Herbert Werner, one of three German U Boat Captains who fought through the entire Second World War and survived.
Also, "Night Fighter" by Bob Braham, one of Britain's top fighter aces of WWII with 29 confirmed kills, all but one at night. He set another record by becoming a squadron commander at age 22.
