The coolant/antifreeze doesn't loose it's ability to prevent freezing or transfer heat as long as it hasn't been diluted with too much water.
It does loose the rust/corrosion inhibitors and can allow the radiator to clog internally with rust and calcium deposits.
If the coolant is rusty red, the radiator may be partially clogged. Might try flushing the system and refilling with 50% antifreeze and distilled water. I would not use any type of flush, just open the drain valve on the radiator and block, and flood with the water hose while the engine is idled up.
Be sure the radiator isn't clogged externally with grass or sand.
As far as brands or types of antifreeze go, I wouldn't think a tractor would be too particular about that unless it's a new high tech model, something with an aluminum radiator. Change it about every 2 to 5 years.
